Just when it seemed like the Denver Broncos may have decided to move in another direction following last week's free-agent visit with J.K. Dobbins, the team signed him to a deal on Tuesday.
The deal is reportedly a one-year, $5.25 contract, giving the Broncos another option in the backfield.
Dobbins spent last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, powering their running game as the No. 1 option in the backfield and rushing for 905 yards despite missing a full month of the season. The Chargers chose to sign Najee Harris and draft Omarion Hampton this offseason, leaving Dobbins to find a new team.
Perhaps the best part of this deal is that despite being in the league for five seasons, he is still just 26 years old. The only knock on him in his career (and it's a big one) is the injuries he has sustained. Dobbins has missed plenty of time with multiple knee injuries and though that will be a concern, that is why the deal is only for one year.
Dobbins joins an inexperienced backfield where second-round pick RJ Harvey figures to be the top back. But Dobbins should be able to come in and contribute immediately and his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield is something Sean Payton will likely covet.
A second-round pick in 2020, Dobbins spent the first four years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens before going to L.A. last year. This will be the first time playing for a coach other than one of the Harbaugh brothers in the NFL.
For his career, Dobbins has rushed for 2,252 yards and 21 touchdowns while adding 59 catches for 330 yards and one more score. His 5.2 yards per carry average is the best number on his stat sheet, however.
He was nominated for Comeback Player of the Year last season, an award that eventually went to Joe Burrow.
