The Dallas Cowboys are facing mounting scrutiny over how they’re handling the contract extension talks with one of the league’s top pass rushers, Micah Parsons. Parsons wants a big new deal, but team owner Jerry Jones appears to be taking a questionable approach. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the situation is now starting to feel personal.

“This sounds different to me. This sounds a little bit more personal from both sides. It sounds like Dallas is upset with the fact it felt like it was getting closer to a deal and that deal went sideways. And I think Micah Parsons feels like this deal should have been done,” Schefter said.

While that drama unfolds off the field, tensions are also spilling over on the field. On Wednesday during training camp, multiple skirmishes broke out. Dallas News’ Calvin Watkins reported that after a third fight nearly broke out, head coach Brian Schottenheimer had the team run laps as punishment.

Cowboys rookie offensive tackle Ajani Cornelius threw a punch, resulting in him getting the boot from practice.

“Brian Schottenheimer wasn’t kidding. OT Ajani Cornelius threw a punch and was kicked out of practice,” NFL writer Todd Archer posted.

This is not an ideal start for either Cornelius or Schottenheimer. Cornelius, who is fighting for a roster spot just  jeopardized that opportunity by losing his composure. Throwing a punch at a teammate not only reflects poor judgment but could also come with serious consequences.

Meanwhile, Schottenheimer himself isn’t without scrutiny. Former Cowboys legend Michael Irvin had doubts from the moment he was hired.

“Here's my issue: We lost an opportunity here," Irvin said, via his Youtbe when Schottenheimer was hired. "I don't know what will happen with Coach Schottenheimer and the Dallas Cowboys, but Jerry's a shrewd, shrewd businessman, and this opportunity, I'm shocked he did not see."

If practices continue to spiral, Schottenheimer may find himself on a short leash. As for Cornelius, this outburst could cost him dearly. With a roster up for grabs, there's never a good time to throw a punch — especially at a teammate. Cornelius will have to figure out a way make up for it quick before he officially loses his spot.
