Cowboys' Jaydon Blue gets key injury update in pursuit of starting RB job image

Jaydon Blue still wants a shot at the Dallas Cowboys' starting running back job.

To get it, he's first got to get back on the field.

The rookie out of Texas got good news on that front on Tuesday. Blue returned to Cowboys practice on Tuesday night.

He's been out with an ankle bruise, but this will give him a chance to play in Friday's preseason finale for what would be his NFL debut in game action.

The fifth-round rookie is battling with the likes of Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders to earn carries right out of the chute to begin his Dallas career.

The Cowboys let Rico Dowdle get away in the offseason, so they need a replacement to help match up with the rest of the offense.

The passing game should be strong. Dak Prescott has both CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens to throw to.

It's harder to see how this running game will work if it's led by underwhelming veterans like Williams and Sanders.

It's a lot easier to see some excitement with Blue. He's one of the fastest RBs in the NFL.

If that ankle is doing OK, he'll get a chance to show that Friday night to close out the preseason, in what will be a highly anticipated set of plays. The Cowboys need Blue to look ready to perform.

They play in the opening game of the NFL season, on the initial Thursday night against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. And now, it looks like Blue might be ready.
