Has the "Summer of Shedeur" already come to an end?
After a solid showing in his first preseason game, Shedeur Sanders was in line to get another valuable exhibition start against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles this Saturday.
Even with the updated Cleveland Browns depth chart having Shedeur at the bottom of the current four-way quarterback battle, the opportunity to be under center and gain extra reps with the starters suggested the 23-year-old was moving in the right direction.
That came to a screeching halt when Shedeur injured his oblique throwing on Wednesday morning and will be out for a bit.
Shedeur isn't just competing for the QB1 role—he's trying to make the roster. With the distractions he brings to an organization, is it worth even having him sit on the bench behind fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel?
On a recent episode of "Maggie and Perloff," Maggie Gray suggested this untimely injury all but put an end to the Shedeur experiment in Cleveland.
"That's a wrap on Shedeur," Gray said. "We might see him again, but I don't know how they expect him to look good without reps. It's over—the story ended yesterday. I think it's impossible even to have a track to the backup job if you're going to miss significant time."
The declaration, although premature, makes sense given what the Browns' brass has thought about Shedeur up to this point.
Shedeur is already at the bottom of the totem pole—how can he possibly change that status if he's sidelined?
Cleveland could try to keep him as a third option, but at this point, it might make more sense for the organization to cut their losses and try to get something of value for the Colorado product.
