Mitchell Trubisky aims to shed backup role and take Josh Allen's spot image

Mitchell Trubisky, No. 2 pick in 2017, is now fighting for the backup quarterback role behind Josh Allen with the Buffalo Bills. However, his sights are set higher than just a backup position. Trubisky, once the franchise quarterback for the Chicago Bears, is determined to compete for the Bills' starting quarterback position.

As he returned to Chicago for Sunday's Week 2 NFL preseason game, ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg reflected on his time with the Bears and his upcoming season with the Bills.

Getzenberg noted that "Trubisky's goal remains to be a starting quarterback." While taking over the 2024 MVP's spot is one of the toughest challenges in the NFL, Trubisky isn't fazed. He's ready for it.

Looking back on his time in Chicago, Trubisky said, "It's a privilege and I miss that, and it's a lot of fun to be the franchise guy, especially in a city like this."

Yet he keeps his sights set on what's ahead: "I think if you have that mindset and strive for that, but also take it one day at a time, everything else will kind of take care of itself in the meantime."

In the preseason opener vs. the New York Giants, Trubisky completed 9 of 13 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.

In the backup role, he has earned confidence from the organization. Bills general manager Brandon Beane said, "We've got a lot of confidence in Mitch. ... If Josh went down now, we'd be very confident in Mitch."

Aiming for the Bills' QB1 role may seem like a far-fetched dream right now. But if the team needs someone they can rely on in critical moments, Mitchell Trubisky is the guy.
