Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has spent time in press conferences this summer thinking back fondly on the days when he had Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer at safety.

For years, McDermott knew his two reliable defensive backs would be out there getting the job done.

It has not been as simple since that duo moved on.

The Bills are hoping to start Cole Bishop and Taylor Rapp at the safety spots this season, but both have been injured at various points in the summer.

Damar Hamlin can hold down one of the spots after a tackle-heavy 2024 season in which the analytics weren't too fond of his overall play.

Regardless of who is back there, it'll be a weaker link than the Hyde and Poyer days, but those aren't coming back.

The Bills made a move on Tuesday to try and at least address the safety concerns a little bit.

Buffalo signed Tre Herndon, who had been with the Colts earlier this summer.

Tre Herndon - officially Willie Herndon III - has played in 84 NFL games, including 34 starts.

All but one of his games has come with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who signed him undrafted out of Vanderbilt in 2018.

In 83 games for the Jags, Herndon had three interceptions, 32 passes defensed and 243 tackles.

He played in just one game with the Saints last season, and now he's looking for his next opportunity.

The Bills are as good a place as any for a safety to find work right now. Herndon will likely see a quality snap load in Buffalo's second preseason game.

Whether he can parlay that into more remains to be seen, but both sides would love it if this new arrangement worked out.
