The Boo Carter saga seemed to be over once fall camp began. Prior to camp, Carter had missed numerous team activities.
“Tennessee sophomore defensive back Boo Carter is expected to be one of the Volunteers' best players in 2025 on defense, offense and special teams, but his status with the team is unclear as we inch closer to August. Carter has missed ‘numerous’ team activities and was even confronted by team leaders because of his absences, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel,” CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani wrote.
Before fall camp opened, head coach Josh Heupel addressed the situation, making it clear Carter would not have an easy path back.
“Boo is a part of our team here,” Heupel said. “There’s some things he’s got to accomplish to get back on the field here. Don’t have a set timetable on that. Our leadership council has been a part of those things, those discussions, with me and with Boo. I’m proud of what they’ve done. They care and love Boo, and want him to be his best too. And through this thing, I think Boo sees that as well.”
Since those comments, Carter has worked his way back into action — but now, concerns are mounting again, and a suspension could be on the table.
“There’s speculation, internally, are they suspending him for the Syracuse game? I don’t know,” said Vols insider Tony Basilio.

This is troubling for Carter, who appears to be slipping into old habits — such as reportedly arriving late to practice. If there’s any silver lining, it’s that he’s still showing up. But at some point, Heupel and his staff will have to make a firm decision regarding his status for the Syracuse game.
While nothing is confirmed about a suspension, Carter’s repeated tardiness may point to issues off the field — potentially involving his mother, who has been vocal on social media. It's worth noting that just last April, another Tennessee athlete’s parent were also a reason for a controversy.
