Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden says he is ready to coach again, but not in the NFL, but in the SEC.
Several times over the years, when the Tennessee Volunteers were seeking a head coach, the name that kept popping up with Gruden.
During a visit to the Georgia football team to give a speech, he told players how much he still wants to coach badly.
“The only reason I really came here is because I want to coach again,” said Gruden while addressing Georgia’s football team. “I’m being honest with you. I do not bullsh-t either. I’d die to coach in the SEC. I would love it. I would f—ing love it.”
“I sit there and I fantasize — I’m fantasizing on the (practice) field,” continued Gruden. “I said, ‘Man, I wish I was coaching against the SEC.’ I want to come to Georgia, between the hedges. I’m fantasizing about going up against Kirby Smart. I’m an offensive coach you see. I’m over there fantasizing about coming down here and beating Georgia in the hedges. That’s what I’m fantasizing about. Because whether you like it or not, you’re the f—ing measuring stick that I base my whole career on as a coach.”
How badly does Gruden want to coach again? He says he’d even be willing to be a grad assistant at Tennessee.
Gruden was at the top of his profession as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders when racist, sexist, and homophobic emails surfaced during an investigation into the Washington Football Team.
That all but ended his career. Now, at 62, Gruden wants a chance to make it right. He may not get that chance at Tennessee, but there may be some SEC school in desperate need of a head coach, that may be willing to take a chance on the head coach.
