USC Trojans football legend-turned-Chicago Bears franchise star Caleb Williams shouldn’t even worry about stories like what ESPN posted about him seeking a way to not get drafted by the Bears in 2024. He went and did the mature franchise quarterback move and did a guest appearance at one of the local high schools.
“Williams admitted he shed a few tears after the Bears selected him with the No. 1 pick in 2024, and he also expressed how grateful he was for the opportunity. The kids at Whitney Young seemed overjoyed to get to share a special moment with him,” ESPN’s staff wrote.
“It's worth noting that Williams has already found sweet ways to give back to the Chicago community through his charity, the Caleb Cares Foundation, which seeks to empower youth, prevent bullying and raise awareness for mental health. His recent Q&A session with high schoolers likely wasn't a one-off, as the Bears quarterback has arguably shown he has what it takes to be a role model despite the latest controversy over his reported shunning of the Bears.”
These are great words for a quarterback with seemingly the weight of Chicago on his shoulders. The team has also invested heavily in him as Buffalo did Josh Allen by making three key moves on the offensive line. That includes trading for Joe Thuney and Jonah Williams, who new head coach Ben Johnson had huge success with while in Detroit. When Buffalo did this, they signed Mitch Morse, Joe Feliciano, and Cody Ford to protect their franchise future.
If this recipe is something that Ben has adopted from watching Sean McDermott do it with Allen, then this might be a good precursor of things to come.
Caleb’s first-year stats in Chicago with DJ Moore and company looked a lot like Allen's second year with Buffalo. He went for 20 touchdowns and only six interceptions, while in 2020, Allen went for 20 touchdowns with nine interceptions. That was before they brought in Stefon Diggs in for the 2021 season, where Josh’s number skyrocketed.
Chicago might have set up Williams a little backwards at first, but putting the same pieces in place as one of the league's best did with their star quarterback might be the very solution for Caleb to potentially shine brighter than Allen this year.
Or at least be in the top 10 conversation.
