Texas playoff scenarios, explained: How loss in SEC title game impacts CFP rankings image

The Texas Longhorns came up just short in a dramatic SEC championship game, falling 22-19 in overtime to Georgia on Saturday. It was the Bulldogs' second victory over Texas this season.

Texas forced overtime with a 37-yard field goal with 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter by Brett Auburn. Auburn gave Texas a 19-16 lead with another field goal on the first possession in overtime, but Georgia drove for a touchdown on their possession, capped by a four-yard run by Travis Etienne.

Texas misses out on a first round bye in the College Football Playoff, but will make the 12-team field.

Is Texas in the College Football Playoff?

Texas will receive an at-large berth to the College Football Playoff. The Longhorns are 11-2 and were ranked No. 2 by the CFP selection committee on Tuesday. The top five conference champions receive bids, and there are seven at-large bids remaining for the first 12-team playoff.

Texas will likely be seeded in the Nos. 5-7 range on Selection Sunday, meaning they will host a first-round game either on Dec. 20 or Dec, 21.

Texas seeding scenarios

If No. 1 Oregon wins the Big Ten championship, Texas will likely be the No. 5 seed, behind the four conference champions and ahead of Notre Dame and Penn State. There is a chance Notre Dame could jump Texas, but it is more likely after an overtime loss to Georgia, Texas will still be ahead of a Notre Dame team that did not face many ranked opponents.
