Syracuse has a starting quarterback.

The Orange brought in two transfers this offseason, Rickie Collins from LSU before spring practice and then Steve Angeli from Notre Dame after spring practice.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reports that Angeli has won the competition.

Angeli will be slated to get the start when Syracuse opens its season against No. 24 Tennessee in a neutral-site clash in Atlanta.

At Notre Dame, Angeli appeared in 21 career games.

His most notable action came in last season's College Football Playoff semifinal against Penn State, when he was forced onto the field late in the first half and completed 6-of-7 passes on a key scoring drive.

The Syracuse starting QB position is a crucial one, because last year, the Orange led the nation in passing offense. Kyle McCord had come to SU from Ohio State, and he threw for 4,770 yards before being a sixth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Angeli played his high school ball at Bergen Catholic in New Jersey, where his head coach Vito Campanile is the brother of SU quarterbacks coach Nunzio Campanile.

The Orange do have Notre Dame on the schedule this year, if Angeli can hold onto the gig. The Orange play in South Bend on Nov. 22.

It's always possible Syracuse still works in some kind of quarterback rotation in the early going, but for now, Angeli is QB1 for the Orange.
