Despite returning for his final season in State College, Penn State quarterback Drew Allar isn’t getting the warmest assessment when it comes to his NFL draft stock.
Although Allar may have the most upside in the Big Ten minus Illinois’ Luke Altmyer regarding returning production, former ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay views Allar differently than other quarterback prospects.
“I need to see more,” McShay said. “He’s here. I don’t know, he’s down to, like, the 10-yard line, but he’s still got 10 hard yards to earn to get to where I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, we can talk about him as QB1 this year.’ Or I feel good about using a top-10 pick on him.”
McShay, of course, is referencing Allar’s shortcomings in the College Football Playoff this past winter against Notre Dame which led to a heartbreaking exit.
Nevertheless, McShay’s podcast partner, Steve Muench, went lighter on Allar but still says he has yet to deliver in a big game (i.e. Ohio State or Oregon).
“If he wants to be the guy in this class, I think he’s gotta step up, he’s gotta get a signature win, he’s gotta have a signature game in one of those games, and we haven’t seen that yet,” Muench said.

Allar will have several opportunities to do just that this fall, which includes rematches against the Ducks and Buckeyes during the regular season.
For now, Allar is going to have much to prove as the Nittany Lions again attempt to remain in the Big Ten title mix this fall.
