Oregon's Dillon Gabriel seen as 'better fit' for Browns despite Shedeur Sanders grabbing all the attention image

Training camp is underway for the Cleveland Browns, and as expected, all eyes are on the team’s four quarterbacks.

The Browns enter camp with one of the league’s most unusual quarterback rooms, featuring veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett alongside rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.

It’s an unconventional setup, to say the least.

Naturally, the biggest question is who will ultimately claim the QB1 role. But that battle also includes a compelling rookie competition. According to CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan, the Browns may prefer the former Oregon quarterback over the Colorado star.

“Despite being the lower-picked player, Sanders has garnered most of the attention in this looming quarterback slugfest given his stature at the collegiate level at Colorado under his father Deion Sanders,” Sullivan wrote. “However, let's not forget that Cleveland chose Gabriel over Sanders when it plucked the Oregon star in the third round. Judging by that decision, it's not going too far out on a limb to say that the Browns feel Gabriel is a better fit for their organization, and that should be a key note when trying to decipher who'll be QB1 to begin the season.”

Back in May, Browns radio color analyst Nathan Zegura told The Sporting News' Bill Bender that the team is high on Gabriel.

“They love Dillon Gabriel,” Zegura said. “I think this draft was, ‘If we come out of the draft with Cam Ward, great, but if we don't come out of the draft with Cam Ward, we're coming out of it with Dillon Gabriel.’”

Gabriel could very well earn the starting job at some point during the season. Then again, any of the four quarterbacks might start at least one game. Regardless, the quarterback situation remains one of the most intriguing storylines of Browns training camp heading into the regular season.
