Bill Belichick is used to being the butt of the joke. The architect of one of sport's most illustrious dynasties was always a bit odd.

But that's why it worked.

From cut-off hoodies with holes in them to a stoic personality matched with a monotone voice, Belichick exuded football excellence in his rugged way that the media loved to adore but often poked fun at.

That reality feels like a lifetime ago.

The 73-year-old is still the joke, but in a far less endearing way.

He's been not so subtly blackballed from the NFL thanks to a reluctance to relinquish power and adapt to modern practices, and is in the midst of a high-profile relationship with a woman nearly 50 years his senior.

On Tuesday, as the head man of North Carolina, Belichick had to do the unthinkable: address his alleged fiancée's role within his program.

During a press conference with the local media, Belichick attempted to set the record straight on his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, and her involvement with the Tar Heels.

"No, she doesn't have any role in the UNC football program," said Belichick. "But again, there's been noise out there about a lot of different things. Again, our focus is day-to-day, getting better, stacking good days together."

In classic Belichick fashion, he responded half-heartedly before quickly changing topics to elude a follow-up.

It's clever, but in this instance, it will only fan the flames.

Hudson might not have a headset, but there have been numerous pictures and accounts of her around the team. In May, higher-ups in the university were compelled to release a statement denying the notion that she was banned, but making it clear she was not an employee of the school.

UNC has one of the more favorable schedules in the country, playing a vast majority of the ACC bottom feeders. There is a path to immediate relevance in the Belichick era, but this constant circus behind the scenes could negate that potential.
