The Texas Longhorns feel like a genuine title or bust team. If they don't win it all, it will be seen as a disappointment by many. Their success hinges on a few things, but perhaps none greater than their need to find a stud on the defensive interior.
After several key players up front went to the NFL or even transferred out of Texas, there is a glaring hole there. CBS Sports' Chris Hummer believes the onus is on Travis Shaw to step up and fill that hole.
"While Purdue transfer Cole Brevard and Maryland transfer Maraad Watson feel like safter bets to contribute for Texas next year, arguably the most talented transfer DT the Longhorns brought in is Shaw," the insider said. The former North Carolina DT never really got going with the Tar Heels, but the Longhorns need him now.
"Shaw is the type of talent who could change the complexion of Texas' defensive line. The Longhorns made a bet that change in circumstance and environment could give Shaw a jolt ahead of his senior season," Hummer added.
As camp arrives, Hummer begged Shaw to show he's capable of being a consistent contributor. If he can do that and reach his ceiling, the Longhorns might've found someone, like Alfred Collins before, who can take the defense to new heights in 2025.
