The Indiana Hoosiers have stayed active on the recruiting trail this offseason and picked up another key commitment Monday morning. This one, though, might be their quarterback of the future. That would be Maine South, Illinois junior Jameson Purcell.
The four-star signal caller out of Park Ridge announced his commitment to head coach Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers on social media, becoming the first commit in Indiana’s 2027 recruiting class.
“Beyond excited & grateful for the opportunity to be a HOOSIER & proud to announce my commitment to Indiana University! Thx to my family, coaches & friends for the support! Can’t wait to get to work,” Purcell wrote on X.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Purcell is a four-star prospect with a 90 rating. He’s ranked as the No. 298 overall player in the country, the No. 20 quarterback in the 2027 class, and the No. 10 player in Illinois.
This is a big get for the Hoosiers, as Purcell chose Indiana over offers from Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Colorado State. He was recruited primarily by co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Chandler Whitmer.
With no clear successor to current starter and Cal transfer Fernando Mendoza, Purcell could be the guy to eventually take over under center. He still has two years of eligibility left and isn’t expected to leave early for the NFL, meaning the staff has time to groom a young quarterback behind him.

It’s too early to say whether Purcell will ultimately be the next man up, but he’s expected to compete with 2026 three-star commit Cash Herrera once Mendoza moves on. He still has two years of eligibility left, giving Indiana some time before a transition under center.
Even so, the staff isn’t waiting around. Cignetti continues to prioritize quarterback depth, making it clear he wants to keep the offense sharp and forward-looking. Landing Purcell is a big part of that plan.
