Dijon Johnson arrest, explained

Johnson was arrested on Friday after Hillsborough County police pulled him over for running a stop sign. Officers claimed that Johnson was argumentative during the traffic stop. He was summarily removed from his car as officers searched his vehicle.

During the search, officers reportedly found marijuana and eight grams of synthetic marijuana inside a backpack. A black Glock 19 was also discovered, allegedly loaded with 17 rounds in a magazine, according to a criminal report filed shortly after Johnson's arrest.

Possession of a firearm is a second-degree felony, while possession of synthetic marijuana is a third-degree felony. Marijuana possession and resisting arrest without violence are misdemeanors.

Johnson filed pleas of not guilty, attorney Tim Taylor told the Associated Press.

In a statement, Florida head coach Billy Napier said the program is"aware of the situation."

"We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal and administrative processes," Napier said.

Johnson was booked on Saturday morning and released Sunday night after posting $8,500 bond.

Johnson, 21, earned four-star billing out of high school. The Tampa native completed his second-year of action in 2024, tallying 27 tackles and two pass deflections across 13 appearances.
