Colorado Buffaloes football legend Shedeur Sanders remains a potential cut candidate for the Cleveland Browns as training camp gets underway in Berea.

The NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reiterated the consensus on the “Grown QB” as he continues to get exclusively second and third-team reps:

There’s a chance he doesn’t make it to opening week with the Browns, with the potential of hitting waivers a very real possibility.

“You’re not keeping four quarterbacks. You got four on the roster here…You traded for Kenny Pickett, then to just get rid of him doesn’t make much sense. You could have four quarterbacks in the building just not necessarily on the roster so I think that’s the way it’s going to play out. Which of those rookies can put stuff on tape in the preseason that makes it hard for the Browns to then subject one of them to get through waivers to get onto the practice squad,” Garafolo said.

While Garafolo didn’t name Sanders specifically, it’s obvious he isn’t talking about Dillon Gabriel.

The former Oregon, Oklahoma, and UCF star could be a “dark horse option” to start Week 1 for the Browns.

“Gabriel played 64 college games at three schools, throwing for 18,722 yards, 155 touchdowns and 32 interceptions across UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon. He will have an adjustment period in the NFL. But the Browns allowed him to begin working with more veteran concepts during minicamp because of the rate at which he was progressing,” Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein wrote.

“Consider Gabriel a dark-horse option for Week 1 starter and realistic option to take further reins later in the season.”

Every report features the caveat that Sanders can change the narrative with his performance.

He hasn’t done that yet, though, and may have too many guys to overcome who are showing QB1 qualities ahead of him.
