There are a lot of high profile coaches in college football, and they're all facing various degrees of pressure. Ryan Day, for example, is under very little pressure since Ohio State just won the title. Brent Venables might be under more pressure. Lincoln Riley is also a little bit on the hot seat.
Where does Brian Kelly sit? Not necessarily on the hot seat, but he's definitely got some pressure on. Paul Finebaum, one of the most prominent college football commentators, believes he needs to at least make the playoff.
Finebaum says that LSU has the talent to succeed, so anything short of being a top-12 seed this year would be a failure. "Brian Kelly, he does need to get to the playoffs. This is his best team, he has admitted that. But he's also considered an elite coach. So, short of a bad season, I don't think anyone is going to worry about his job security."
But as long as the team doesn't totally fizzle out, then Kelly will be fine. Barring a collapse of epic proportions this year, LSU isn't going to be in the market for a new head coach next year. They just need to do better than in the past with Kelly or questions about his ability and the program's status moving forward.
