BYU needed a new starting quarterback.
Expected starter Jake Retzlaff transferred to Tulane after a violation of the school's honor code had him lined up for a seven-game suspension, per ESPN.
That left an opening, and Bear Bachmeier seized it.
Bachmeier will start the season opener against Portland State on Aug. 30, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Yes, his name is really Bear.
Even better, Bachmeier wears No. 47, which is very much not a QB number.
He'll be the first true freshman to start a season opener for BYU, per Thamel.
Bachmeier beat out a pair of transfers: McCae Hillstead (Utah State) and Treyson Bourguet (Western Michigan).
Bear hasn't been at BYU long. He spent the spring at Stanford before transferring to join the Cougars in early May.
Bachmeier didn't come alone. His older brother, Tiger, also transferred from Stanford to BYU at the same time.
The Cougars play the Cardinal in Week 2, so that could be quite the revenge game for Bear and Tiger.
BYU is coming off a season in which it finished 11-2, including a bowl win over Colorado.
The expectations are high again in Provo, even after the quarterback uncertainty.
It'll be up to Bear Bachmeier to take the reins and try to lead BYU to the places it wants to go, and he'll do it with flowing hair, an awesome name and an unlikely uniform number.
