The Los Angeles Lakers have had quite the summer, to say the least—one filled with enough drama to even spark speculation that LeBron James might request a trade. In the midst of it all, the Lakers secured Luka Dončić with a contract extension, locking in their new star. After signing the deal, Dončić made headlines off the court with a generous gesture to support young athletes.
“Today I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation,” Dončić posted.
A major driver behind the early-summer trade rumors surrounding James was the perceived mismatch between his career timeline and the Lakers' long-term vision. But Dončić quickly silenced those concerns, making it clear that he's not interested in a slow rebuild.
“Dončić being just 26 gives the Lakers a far longer timeline to build a championship-contending team, but that doesn't mean they can slow down and take their time. Dončić told Lakers president Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick in May that he's not interested in taking the slow approach in building a contender,” wrote CBS Sports’ Jasmyn Wimbish.
Still, the Lakers may not be done making moves. One potential deal would send Gabe Vincent and Maxi Kleber in exchange for Dillon Brooks—though James wouldn’t be thrilled with that acquisition.
“He wouldn’t be the first villain turned Laker with the likes of Ron Artest and Matt Barnes. Even Dwight Howard redeemed himself in more recent years. And Brooks still is a decent player. He’s a great defender, arguably one of the best wing defenders in the league. He’s a streaky shooter who is capable of some big performances, too. With the Lakers, he’d almost certainly be a reserve, meaning his leash could be much shorter when he starts doing crazy things, which could help him,” wrote Silver Screen and Roll’s Jacob Rude.

Imagining James and Brooks sharing the floor might be hard for some fans. However, if James is serious about doing whatever it takes to win another championship, this could be a move that pushes the Lakers closer to that goal. A LeBron–Brooks pairing is something no one likely had on their bingo card—but it might just work.
