The Philadelphia 76ers are looking to return to playoff contention after missing the postseason with a 24-58 record in an injury-riddled 2024-25 campaign.
One player affected by injuries was star forward Paul George, who signed a four-year, $211.6 million deal with the 76ers in July 2024. The contract includes a player option for the 2027-28 campaign, which the now 35-year-old seems likely to pick up, leaving the Sixers with a massive financial commitment.
Given his sizable contract and diminishing production, it wouldn't be surprising if the Sixers eventually look to move the aging star. Brandon Austin of Pro Football & Sports Network listed George as a trade candidate for the 76ers this season, suggesting a focus on the youth movement in Philadelphia.
“For Philadelphia, moving George offers a potential reset after a failed season,” he wrote. “While the front office hasn't aggressively shopped him, his declining production and substantial salary make him a potential trade piece.”

The 76ers have limited cap flexibility due to the contracts of George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, and they haven't made it past the second round of the playoffs since 2001.
The club also features young talent in Jared McCain and No. 3 overall pick V.J. Edgecombe, both of whom the team may prioritize developing alongside Maxey in the coming years. As a result, George may no longer fit into the franchise's long-term plans.
His hefty contract could complicate trade talks. Still, there may be a market for the nine-time All-Star, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the 76ers explore their options — especially if injuries or his declining production persist in the 2025-26 campaign.
