Why Luka Doncic is sitting out USA vs Slovenia FIBA Basketball World Cup tune-up game

Doncic is missing the USA vs Slovenia game "as a precaution," according to a team statement. Slovenia said that he "received an unfavorable blow" in the first half of Friday's loss to Spain, so it didn't want to "leave anything to chance."

The 24-year-old appeared to tweak his left knee while fouling Santi Aldama on a 3-point attempt in the second quarter, but he remained in the game. Slovenia coach Aleksander Sekulic initially said the plan was to play Doncic, though he added that the final decision would come down to "how he feels."

Slovenia will play its final tune-up game against Japan on Aug. 19. The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will begin on Aug. 25.
