D’Angelo Russell Signs with Mavericks: A Key Addition To The Mavs While Kyrie Recovers image

The Dallas Mavericks have signed veteran guard D’Angelo Russell to a two-year, $13 million contract with a player option in the second year — a move that could pay significant dividends as the team awaits Kyrie Irving’s return from injury, expected in early 2026. Russell’s arrival brings not only offensive firepower but also veteran stability at the point guard spot during a crucial stretch for the Mavericks.

With Irving out, Russell will take on a larger offensive load, something he’s more than capable of handling. Known for his crafty ball-handling, sharp passing, and ability to score from all three levels, DLo gives Dallas a much-needed offensive creator. His court vision and feel for the game allow him to control tempo, keep the offense flowing, and find open teammates in rhythm.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the signing is Russell’s existing chemistry with big man Anthony Davis. This relationship dates back to their shared time with the Los Angeles Lakers. Their two-man game — built on timing, spacing, and mutual trust — could be reignited in Dallas. With Davis still playing at an elite level, Russell’s understanding of where and how to get him the ball will be a significant advantage for the Dallas Mavericks.

Russell’s presence also benefits Dallas’ perimeter threats. His ability to drive and dish will generate clean looks for sharpshooters like Klay Thompson and Max Christie, both of whom thrive on catch-and-shoot opportunities. With Russell running the offense, expect the Mavericks to continue spreading the floor and attacking defenses with pace and precision.

This move will fly under the radar compared to bigger offseason deals. Still, Russell gives Dallas exactly what it needs: a confident, proven playmaker to guide the offense until Kyrie returns. If he performs at a high level, he could carve out a lasting role in the Mavericks’ rotation, even once the roster is back at full strength.
