The New York Knicks are prioritizing depth additions throughout this offseason. They’ve already signed Jordan Clarkson, and Guerschon Yabusele, and are still looking to add as they gear up to contend for a championship.
Sports Illustrated’s Zach Roberts suggests that the Knicks should swing a trade for Charlotte Hornets wing Josh Okogie.
He presented a mock trade that is as follows:
Knicks receive: Josh Okogie, Grant Williams
Hornets receive: Mitchell Robinson
“The Knicks could throw in a few future second-round picks to satisfy Charlotte. Neither Okogie nor Williams is probably worth a first-round pick, so that's unlikely. Either way, this trade is a win for both sides,” Roberts wrote. “The Knicks retain a big man in this swap, keeping some depth down low. They also get another versatile wing to go along with OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges, giving them someone of the same ilk to come off the bench.”
Okogie has spent time with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns along with Charlotte. He averages 6.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per game for his career. He was traded to Charlotte from Phoenix at this past season’s trade deadline and averaged 8.9 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in 15 appearances with the Hornets.
Should the Knicks trade for Okogie, it would deepen their bench depth even further as the Knicks continue to strengthen their second unit. New York was dead last in total points, and points per game off the bench last season, so bolstering their depth is key for them if they wish to contend next season.
