The Minnesota Timberwolves have been very active early in the 2025 offseason, securing two major players on their roster, extending Naz Reid to a five-year deal along with Julius Randle to a three-year deal.
The move reflects President of Basketball Operations Tim Conelly's intention to keep the core intact in the hopes of making another deep postseason run. However, those decisions came at a cost. They've lost solid role players like Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who signed with the Atlanta Hawks.
While the offseason is far from over, speculation is swirling about Randle's longtime fit in the Twin Cities, with some NBA analysts believing that the Timberwolves could get out of Randle's contract. one in particular is Gilbert Arenas.
"They can get rid of Julius, get some pieces for him, and get Naz Reid, who can start with his contract. You're talking about five years," Arenas said on Gil's Arena. "They have some wiggle room to stay competing. It keeps them competing, so it's a good deal for the Wolves."
Randle was acquired by Minnesota last offseason in the deal that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks. He impressed in his first season with the Timberwolves, having averaged 18.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.7 assists, helping anchor the front court next to Rudy Gobert.
He elevated his play in the postseason, averaging 21.7 points per game throughout the 2025 NBA Playoffs. The Timberwolves were eliminated by the eventual NBA champion, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Meanwhile Reid has remained an impactful player for the Timberwolves, having won the Sixth Man of the Year award in 2024.
While a deal involving Randle seems unlikely at the moment for the Timberwolves, his contract could be a valuable trade asset down the line for the Timberwolves if they opt to go in a different direction.
