The Dallas Mavericks are entering a pivotal offseason with several pressing questions to answer.
While the team was fortunate enough to land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, a chance to select Duke phenom Cooper Flagg, they still have some concerns, particularly at the point guard position, with Kyrie Irving expected to miss some time during the 2025-26 season.
Even with the possibility of adding the top prospect in this year's draft, Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison would still have to address the future of several players on the roster.
One of the biggest questions, in particular, is about what the team does with P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford.
Both Washington and Gafford have been pivotal rotational players for the Mavericks since arriving in Dallas during the 2024 trade deadline. However, both players are entering the final year of their contracts, and retaining both players could be very tricky to navigate.
Despite the chatter surrounding both stars, NBA Insider Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks intend to keep both Washington and Gafford.
"I'm not sitting here saying they won't be traded… I think their preference is they would love to find a way to not have to surrender either one. I just don't know if that’s practical."
Gafford and Washington have proven to be big-time contributors throughout their stints in Dallas. However, with the roster changes looming, the front office could weigh their value in possible trades as they look to build around a roster that features Irving, Anthony Davis, and the possible addition of Cooper Flagg.
There are plenty of teams throughout the league that would benefit from the addition of Gafford and Washington, two proven veterans who can contribute to a winning culture.
