The Boston Celtics have already begun retooling their roster this offseason, and Kristaps Porzingis could be the next key contributor on the move.
The 2024 NBA champions are expected to shed salary and get younger this summer. They’ve already traded Jrue Holiday to Portland in exchange for Anfernee Simons — a move seen as just the tip of the iceberg in Boston.
The club is also reportedly open to moving on from Porzingis, who is entering the final year of his contract and is set to earn $30.7 million next season.
While several teams are likely to show interest in the 29-year-old big man, the Spurs have emerged as a potential suitor, according to Zachary Weinberger of ClutchPoints.
San Antonio would pair the 7-foot-2 Porzingis with 7-foot-3 center Victor Wembanyama, forming a towering frontcourt with elite shot-blocking prowess.
However, the Spurs also hold the No. 14 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and could look to add a frontcourt piece through the draft.
Even if a deal with San Antonio doesn’t materialize, the Celtics are expected to explore trade discussions involving Porzingis, whom they acquired via trade ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. Over two seasons in Boston, he averaged 19.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.7 blocks per game across 99 regular-season outings.
Injury concerns remain — Porzingis has appeared in at least 60 regular-season games just once since the 2017-18 campaign — but he could be a compelling fit alongside Wembanyama, even if it’s just a short-term pairing.
