Tiger Woods carded four birdies and no bogeys on his front-9 Sunday at the Quicken Loans National in Gainesville, Va., making the turn at 9-under for the tournament.

Although it appears the strong start to Sunday's fourth round is too little, too late after Saturday's 3-over 74 dropped him far down the leader board, the former world No. 1 has to be encouraged by his effort.

Kevin Chappell and Troy Merritt, the tournament's 54-hole leaders at 14-under, aren't scheduled to tee off until 2:25 p.m. ET. They're one shot clear of Rickie Fowler and two shots ahead of four others.

Given Woods' well-chronicled struggles, his bounce-back effort Sunday gives him reason for hope as the season's final major — the PGA Championship Aug 13-16 at Whistling Straits — draws near.
