The St. Louis Cardinals have seen a lot of change over the last month. From the departure of a trio of relievers to the return of injured starters, the Cardinals are also likely to see even more changes in the offseason.
But, in the middle of the 2025 campaign, one pitcher, who was recalled partway through the year, is making the most of their opportunity in the starting rotation. As Miranda Remaklus of Redbird Rants writes, Cardinals 25-year-old starter Michael McGreevy is "taking full advantage of their runway post trade deadline."
"Since his final start of the e2024 season," Remaklus writes, "McGreevy has been the most patient member of the St. Louis Cardinals. He earned his spot on the Cardinals roster, but couldn't quite secure it due to a backlog of pitchers."
But the departure of Erick Fedde in a trade to the Atlanta Braves paved the way for the young Cardinals starter. He's a big part of the team's future plans, and getting him an extended run in the Majors is huge for his development.
While he hasn't been lighting the world on fire this season, there is still promise for the young starter. His first start of 2025 came in the form of a 5.2-inning win over the New York Mets in May. But, he didn't make another start until June, more than a month later.

In the eight starts since the beginning of June, McGreevy has a 4.96 ERA across 45.1 innings of work with 23 strikeouts and six walks. While he's kept the walks down, his strikeout numbers aren't great, and he's also allowed four home runs.
But, if there's one encouraging thing from this stretch, it's his 3.71 FIP, indicating that his ERA could be better if it weren't for bad luck in the field or poor defensive play. But, his ERA is still too high, and getting it lower in the final month and a half of the 2025 season would be a good way to head into 2026 for McGreevy.
With Miles Mikolas likely departing in the offseason, McGreevy is a huge piece of the starting rotation going forward. At only 25 years old, he still has plenty of time to figure things out in the Majors.
While his statistics aren't the best, he's been a solid starter and has the potential to be a good member of the rotation. His 1.96 ERA in three starts in 2024 was encouraging, and getting back to that form shouldn't be out of the question for McGreevy.
The flash he's shown in his career is enough to get excited about, and in the wake of the Fedde deal, McGreevy is taking advantage of this opportunity.
