The St. Louis Cardinals have played their way back into contention after starting the season 14-19. They have won 19 of their last 26 games and are seven games above the .500 mark.
What they'll do at the trade deadline is not entirely clear. They could add a piece or two, but other players could be expendable.
They have a lot of players on expiring contracts that teams may show interest in as the deadline approaches.
Scott Plaza of Redbird Rants listed reliever Phil Maton as somebody who could be expendable.
"Maton would be an attractive trade target because of his cheap contract as well. [Ryan] Helsley is making $8.2 million this year and will see a bigger salary when he hits free agency next year. Teams may be hesitant to give up too much for a rental and settle for a cheaper, effective option in Maton. Reliever-needy teams could create a bidding war for the righty, which could increase the prospect capital the Cardinals may receive in a deal."

If the Cardinals remain in contention, it might make more sense to trade Maton than Helsley. Either way, they need to address their minor league pitching depth, which has taken a hit due to injuries.
Maton has been a revelation for St. Louis since signing a one-year deal with them in mid-March.
The 32-year-old right-hander owns a 2.45 ERA in 24 Appearances and has even recorded two saves this season.
Last year, rental relievers were bringing back significant prospect returns, and Maton could do that for St. Louis if they try to trade him.
The market this year appears to favor sellers more than buyers, and there may not be a lot of relievers available.
We'll see if Maton is on the block for St. Louis.
