Sometimes, the numbers are just too good to pass up.
How does 6-foot-5 with a .376 batting average and 16 homers sound?
The San Francisco Giants decided they'd give that a shot. After the conclusion of the MLB Draft, they signed Hayden Jatczak to an undrafted free agent deal.
Jatczak just put up those stats at Kent State in the MAC.
It was the first Division I season for Jatczak, who had to work his way up to play for the Golden Flashes.
He began his college career at Division II Saginaw Valley State. There, he hit .390 as a freshman, then .372 as a sophomore. As a junior at SVSU, Jatczak batted an absurd .468 with 16 homers and 82 RBI to earn the chance to transfer up.
In addition to the .376 and 16 HRs at KSU, Jatczak had 28 doubles, four triples, 81 RBI and 10 steals in 12 attempts. He also walked 46 times compared to 37 strikeouts.
That statistical profile certainly looks the part.

Jatczak turns 24 in August, so he's a bit further along the development timeline than many prospects. He spent most of his Kent State season at third base, with a couple appearances at second base and shortstop. He has a strong arm, having formerly been a pitcher, but that wasn't something he did in Kent.
It's a worthwhile chance for the Giants to take.
