The San Francisco Giants' depth in the infield has gone through turmoil all year, and once again, it was tested.
Giants third baseman Matt Chapman is heading to the injured list for the second time in 2025, this time due to inflammation in his right hand, as first reported by The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser. In an effort to reduce further swelling, Chapman has received a cortisone shot to combat the inflammation, but the efforts have been futile.
Chapman was first placed on the injured list back on June 8 when he sustained a sprain in his right hand. Since being reinstated from that injury on July 8, Chapman admitted that his hand was not at 100% and has been playing like that since.
It was apparent that his hand was not completely healthy, as his production at the plate plummeted in between his two IL stints. His slashline since his return to San Francisco has been anything but good, as he has posted a .200/.290/.365 in 131 plate appearances.
This is scheduled to be a short IL stint for the Giants' third baseman, but he admitted that he needs the entire offseason to recover.
It's not just Chapman who is struggling at the plate; overall, the entire San Francisco Giants team has been on a skid.
In their last 28 games, San Francisco has a record of 7-21, which includes a current six-game losing streak, and a dreadful stretch at home, dropping their last 14 of 15 home games.
