The Cubs will call up Kyle Schwarber, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 Draft, so he can serve as a designated hitter in the team's next six games in AL ballparks, ESPN.com reported.

Schwarber, a 22-year-old catcher hitting .320/.579/1.017 at Double-A Tennessee, will meet the team in Cleveland and then go on to Minnesota for a three-game series.

"Kyle has had a tremendous developmental year so far behind the plate, with the bat and as a leader," president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said Monday evening. "His next stop is to continue his development as a catcher at Triple-A.

"First, however, he is going to join the major league team for six days to contribute as a designated hitter, as a bat off the bench and as a third catcher. He will also use the time in the big leagues to experience firsthand all that goes into being a major league catcher. Regardless of how this week goes, Kyle will head to Triple-A after Sunday's game."

A three-year standout at Indiana University, Schwarber is ranked as the No. 42 overall prospect in baseball by MLB.com and No. 2 in the Cubs' system. In 130 minor league games, Schwarber has a .333/.610/1.042 slash line and 31 home runs.

A tribute to Epstein's roster makeover, he is the third former first-round pick to make his Cubs debut in 2015, joining Kris Bryant and Addison Russell, called up earlier this season.
