The New York Yankees didn't get Juan Soto back. Instead, the crosstown rival Mets took Soto to their side of the Subway Series.
And because of that, the Yankees are heading toward the trade deadline with a bit of extra desperation.
ESPN's Buster Olney explained in a new article out Friday:
"After the departure of Juan Soto, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman are probably under more pressure to do something this season than any of their peers. What else is new?"
The Yankees always put pressure on themselves to get the best players. That's their history.
But after not keeping Soto, it almost feels like a mistake has to be remedied.

It's not like Soto would've solved New York's glaring third base problem, but Olney still has a point.
The Yankees can put that departure more in the past if they add a guy like Eugenio Suarez or Ryan McMahon to play the hot corner and hit home runs.
Soto will be looming across town for the next decade, so the best Cashman and company can do is try to put a team on the field that makes it easier to forget he's missing.
