Rob Brantly, a former Tigers third-round draft pick, signed a minor league deal today with the New York Yankees, their Triple-A affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre announced.
The Yankees have made the following moves affecting SWB:

• C Rob Brantly signed to a Minor League contract by NY and assigned to SWB
The 10-year veteran catcher was added for depth at the minor league level after the Yankees traded a pair of catching prospects at the deadline. Brantly was previously in the Miami Marlins system and appeared in just three Major League games this season. He was released by Triple-A Jacksonville on Aug. 4.
Brantly was drafted in the third round of the 2010 draft by Detroit, but he never played for the Major League club. During his three years in the Tigers organization, he worked his way up to Triple-A Toledo, where he hit .254 over 36 games in 2012.
But he was traded to the Marlins’ farm system that July and made his MLB debut just weeks later. He’s played in just 141 Major League games throughout his career, with a .226/.286/.323 slash line.
The Yankees are no stranger to Brantly, who was with the organization for two seasons in 2021 and 2022. However, he appeared in just seven games for New York and elected free agency after the 2022 season. He has failed to surpass 33 at-bats in a season since his first two years in the league with Miami.
New York has no use for catchers in the Majors thanks to Austin Wells, J.C. Escarra and Ben Rice. But Brantly adds depth at the Triple-A level and is a solid veteran presence for young prospects who are still developing their game for the big leagues.
