The New York Yankees have been slumping recently, mostly because of an offensive drought. However, their starting rotation could still be their biggest focus at the trade deadline.
The Yankees lost Gerrit Cole before the season to Tommy John surgery. Luis Gil still has not pitched this season for the Yankees. Max Fried, Carlos Rodón and Ryan Yarbrough have played well. However, the Yankees still need a true replacement for Cole. MLB insider Mark Feinsand suggested Freddy Peralta as a fit for the Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays.
If Peralta is made available, it will not be easy to acquire him. The Milwaukee Brewers' trading Peralta is not necessarily an indication that they are giving up on the season. It's just in line with how the organization operates. The Brewers would want pieces for the future and players to help them now. They have shown in the past that they would rather trade a player with a year left of control to maximize the value than eventually lose him in free agency.
The Brewers did the same thing with Josh Hader, Corbin Burnes and Devin Williams. BALLCAP Sports' Jim Riley proposed this trade that would send Peralta to the Yankees:
- Yankees receive: Freddy Peralta
- Brewers receive: Clarke Schmidt and Rafael Flores (Yankees No. 15 prospect)

The Brewers have a surplus of starting pitchers. Jacob Misiorowski just made his debut and looked great. Logan Henderson was phenomenal in three starts, but was sent down because of how many pitchers the Brewers have. Aaron Civale was traded because the Brewers did not have enough spots in the rotation. All of that, paired with Brandon Woodruff and Nestor Cortes coming back eventually, means the Brewers may consider trading Peralta.
Schmidt is not on the same level as Peralta, but he has multiple years of control and could help the Brewers this year. Meanwhile, the Yankees would be getting an ace with one more year of control, and save the Brewers from having to worry about paying him.
