The Chicago Cubs have been flirting with a big move for quite a while.

New York Mets star slugger Pete Alonso was in trade rumors over the last two seasons, and Chicago consistently was mentioned as a possible landing spot. The Cubs were eying him, but New York decided against trading him.

Alonso still is with the Mets but will be a free agent at the end of the season and is projected to get a mammoth deal worth roughly $242 million by Spotrac.

Despite the high cost, the New York Post's Jon Heyman didn't rule the Cubs out as a possible option for him in free agency as a way to jumpstart the offense in 2025.

"Cubs have been rumored for a long time," Heyman said. "(Michael Busch) actually has been playing well at first base. Could Busch move to second and then sign Alonso? I mean, possibly. I'm not ruling it out. It doesn't seem like the likeliest scenario."

Heyman noted that a move shouldn't be considered likely, but the fact that Chicago hasn't been ruled out should be a good sign for Cubs fans. Alonso is one of the best sluggers in baseball. If the Mets decide not to bring him back, that could open a great door for the Cubs. Imagine Alonso's power at Wrigley Field? He would be a great fit, but the biggest issue certainly is the high cost. We will see what happens this winter.
