The 2025 Breeders' Cup Challenge Series forges ahead to Monmouth Park this weekend for the 2025 Haskell Stakes. The winner of this annual G1 race will earn $1 million, as well as an automatic and free entry to the Breeders' Cup World Championships later this year.
For the thoroughbreds involved, the concept is simple: win, and you're in. A victory this weekend — and for that matter, a win at any of the Challenge Series events — means an automatic berth into the $7 million G1 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 1.
Journalism — who won the Preakness and finished runner-up at the Kentucky Derby and Belmont — is the easy morning-line favorite to win the Haskell. Analysts saw the Michael McCarthy-trained colt on the Monmouth track as early as Tuesday, and most like the thoroughbred to prevail on Saturday evening.
Goal Oriented (Not This Time), a Bob Baffert trainee, will also be among the eight contenders running on Saturday. Goal Oriented finished a disappointing fourth in the Preakness, but many like the colt out of the eighth gate this weekend. A win would give Baffert a record 10th win in Monmouth's marquee race.
This year's Breeders' Cup Challenge Series will be bigger and better than ever, quite literally, with a record number of qualifying races all over the world. Most of the Challenge Series races will be televised nationally, and this weekend's Haskell Stakes is no different. Horse racing fans can watch on NBC on Saturday evening, or they can live-stream the race if they don't have cable.
