Tennessee vs. Texas softball final score, result: Longhorns blank Volunteers to move onto WCWS final image

Texas has endured a long and sordid history in the Women's College World Series. On Monday, the Longhorns added another chapter to that record — albeit in a more positive manner.

Fueled by strong pitching from Mac Morgan and Teagan Kavan, Texas downed Tennessee, 2-0, punching its ticket to the WCWS final in the process.

Morgan and Kavan proved as effective as ever, firing off precise efforts from the mound. Morgan tied her season-high in strikeouts, recording four across four innings of work. Kavan came in for relief after the fifth, tallying the final nine outs to secure the win.

Mike White's side doesn't yet have a WCWS title to its name. With a glistening rotation and a murderer's row of a lineup, perhaps that can change in the coming few days.

Tennessee vs. Texas live updates, highlights from Women's College World Series

(All times ET.)

Seventh inning

2:06 p.m.: Kavan strikes out Emma Clarke! The Longhorns are moving onto the WCWS final!

Sixth inning

1:58 p.m.: Texas adds a run courtesy of an error. Kavan steps to the mound.

1:45 p.m.: Kavan coaxes another three outs — one strikeout, one flyout and one groundout. The Longhorns are just three outs away from their third WCWS final appearance.

Fifth inning

1:40 p.m.: Pickens holds serve as the game moves to the sixth inning.

1:35 p.m.: Kavan takes care of business, swiftly recording three outs to bring us to the bottom half of the frame.

1:25 p.m.: With the Longhorns clinging to a one-run advantage, they’ve turned to their ace: Teagan Kavan. She’ll look to record the game’s final nine outs and send Texas to the WCWS final.

Fourth inning

1:16 p.m.: HOME RUN! Katie Stewart rips a Pickens’ scorcher into the left field bleachers, with the effort just evading the left fielder’s grasp.

Texas 1, Tennessee 0

1:12 p.m.: An eventful top half sees Morgan collect another two strikeouts as well as an ejection — Tennessee hitting coach Craig Snider was handed his walking papers after coming out on the field to argue balls and strikes.

Still, the score remains level at 0.

Third inning

1:02 p.m.: Mitchell pops up in foul ground! Pickens gets out the frame unscathed!

12:59 p.m.: Pickens puts Atwood away with the change! Two gone in the frame! Here comes Mitchell, who has gone deep with each of her last three hits.

12:57 p.m.: Scott walks! The bases are loaded with just one away! And guess who is up to bat? Texas' crown jewel: Atwood. Expect fireworks here.

12:55 p.m.: Kayden Henry races into first to beat out an infield dribbler of her own. Two on, one out for Texas. Slugger Mia Scott is up to the plate.

12:52 p.m.: Texas is causing a bit of mayhem to start the third. Kaydee Bennett strode to first after beating out an infield single after replay review. She then swiped second, just sneaking underneath the tag. The Longhorns have a runner on second with zero outs. Let's see if this can materialize into anything.

12:45 p.m.: The Vols got a better handle on Morgan's pitch selection in the third; Dodge authored up a 10-pitch at-bat before lining out while Taylor Pannell took first with a single.

Nevertheless, it wasn't enough for Tennessee to actually get on the board.

Second inning

12:37 p.m.: Tennessee's defense came through in a major way, corralling two grounders, one of which was of the eye-catching variety. To the third we go! The scoreboard remains untouched through two.

12:28 p.m.: Morgan's tactic of eliciting poor contact from hitters is working a charm against Tennessee so far.  Four batters, three ground outs and the Longhorns are back in the dugout.

First inning

12:22 p.m.: Pickens whiffs star slugger Reese Atwood as the inning ends with a whimper.

12:16 p.m.: Here comes Pickens, arguably the sport's best pitcher. She'll duel with Ashton Maloney to start.

12:13 p.m.: Morgan collects another strikeout to end the frame. Her season-high in K's is four. She's at two already.

12:11 p.m.: Ella Dodge legs out a double after lifting a ball into left field. After recording two quick outs, that's just what the Volunteers needed.

12:08 p.m.: And we're off! The WCWS semifinal is underway as Morgan takes aim at sophomore Gabby Leach.

11:55 a.m.: Here's a look at the lineups for today's mid-day affair:

11:45 a.m.: As for Tennessee, it will hand the ball to ace Karlyn Pickens. The first-team All-American is softball's hardest-ever thrower, clocking in with a 79.4 mph effort in the Super Regionals. She blends speed with precision, striking out just under 300 while posting a minuscule 1.17 ERA across 220.2 innings of work.

11:30 a.m.: Taking the bump for the Longhorns today is Mac Morgan. The senior posted a 3.42 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 69.2 innings. Morgan's known more for her ability to pitch to contact than her dazzling whiff rates. She's as accurate at they come, surrendering only 17 walks this year. She struggled in her lone appearance against the Vols earlier in the year, giving up two earned runs and three walks across just 2.2 innings in a loss. But she's been as steady as they come as of late, enjoying strong showings as both a starter and reliever.
