The College World Series has played host to a number of starring performances.
Still, there's nothing quite like perfection.
College baseball's grandest tournament has offered a platform for pitchers past and present to take center stage. For a precious few, that has resulted in immortality — both in terms of landing major hardware and collecting sparkling displays.
Perfection is hard to obtain in those conditions. But some have gotten closer than others, lighting the tournament up one fiery fastball at a time.
With that, here's a look at the history of perfect games and no-hitters at the College World Series.
How many perfect games have there been at CWS?
To date, there hasn't been a perfect game in the College World Series. All 39 perfect games have occurred during regular season matchups. Maryland hurler Dick Reitz was the first to accomplish the feat, blanking Johns Hopkins on April 10, 1959.
Arkansas star Gage Wood's gem vs. Murray State in the 2025 College World Series is the closest any twirler has gotten to perfection since 1999, the start of the play-by-play era. He set aside 21 straight batters before hitting a batter to kick off the eighth inning.
How many no-hitters have there been at CWS?
No-hitters have proven slightly more commonplace in College World Series history, at least when compared to their faultless siblings. But only slightly: just tthreeo players have thrown no-nos under the CWS banner.
The first came on June 19, 1950 when Texas standout Jim Ehrler sank Tufts amid a barrage of strikeouts in the first-ever College World Series played at Rosenblatt Stadium. The Longhorns went on to claim the national championship that season.
A decade later, Oklahoma State ace Jim Wixson joined him in CWS immortality. The Cowboys' talent swept North Carolina aside as Oklahoma State advanced to the national semifinals.
Grant Wood is the latest player to toss a CWS no-no. The Razorbacks pitcher whiffed 19 batters while letting just one runner on base — courtesy of an eighth-inning hit by pitch.
How many no-hitters have there been in NCAA baseball tournament?
Including Ehrler, Wixson and Wood's starring CWS displays, there have been nine no-hitters in tournament history.
