A familiar face will be sticking around in Dallas for another year.

Throughout the past few months, the Mavericks have had little consistency. With Luka Doncic being dealt and Cooper Flagg potentially pushing out some frontcourt depth, the Mavericks will look incredibly different at the start of next season compared to the start of 2024-25.

However, if you look at one spot on the bench, it might just seem like nothing has changed over the past decade. On Friday, Marc Stein reported that Dwight Powell has exercised his $4 million player option for next season.

Although Powell has seen his role decrease over the past couple of years with so much competition inside, his importance in Dallas is clear. In December 2014, the Mavericks made a blockbuster deal to acquire Rajon Rondo from the Boston Celtics.

While Rondo’s time in Dallas ended in infamy just a few months later, that deal wasn’t a complete loss, as the Mavericks also got Powell in the trade. Since arriving in Dallas, Powell has taken on just about every role imaginable.

Although he is a bench warmer at this stage of his career, Powell has been a valuable backup and was even the starting center for Dallas on its Western Conference Finals run in 2022.

Powell arrived in Dallas while Dirk Nowitzki was still leading the team to the playoffs and has even outlasted the Doncic era. While Mavericks fans have no idea what their team might do next, they know there’s a good chance that Powell will be along for the ride.
