Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd has been in the headlines in the early portion of the offseason…but it has nothing to with the Mavericks.

Kidd has been pursued heavily by the New York Knicks, whose head coaching job recently opened after they fired Tom Thibodeau.

However, the Mavericks denied permission for New York to interview to Kidd. The Knicks also were denied by the Atlanta Hawks (Quin Snyder), Chicago Bulls (Billy Donovan), Minnesota Timberwolves (Chris Finch), and Houston Rockets (Ime Udoka).

Thursday, the Rockets signed Udoka to a long-term extension following a very successful season in Houston. NBA Insider Marc Stein believes that Dallas should do the same with Kidd.

“The Knicks wanted him. I think the Knicks to some degree still want him,” Stein said on the DLLS Mavs Podcast. “The Mavericks did what they were supposed to do, they said no they have Jason Kidd under contract. But to me, he has to get an extension, I don’t think there’s any question. Will it happen? When it happens? We’ll have to see.”

Kidd has been the head coach of the Mavericks since 2021. In four seasons, he has compiled 179-149 record, reaching two Western Conference Finals, and an NBA Finals appearance in 2024.

This past season saw the Mavericks trade away franchise icon Luka Dončić at the trade deadline, yet also land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, presenting quite a unique situation for the team’s championship window, which remains to be seen if Kidd will be a part of or not.
