The Boston Celtics have seemingly spent all offseason wheeling and dealing, and they could have another big move on the horizon.
Over the past few years, the Celtics have consistently been near the top of the Eastern Conference, contending for championships. However, Jayson Tatum’s torn Achilles and an offseason of departures have put the Celtics in a much different position ahead of next season.
With title contention out the window, the Celtics would likely still like to make the playoffs, but every move will be with the 2026-27 season in mind. Considering Boston’s horrendous financial outlook at the beginning of the summer, it is in a much better spot now, but it could still shed some salary or at least make a move that makes sense for when Tatum returns.
Most of the noise in Boston has surrounded the potential trade of Anfernee Simons, who the Celtics acquired from Portland in the Jrue Holiday deal. With Simons being on the trade block since the moment he arrived in Boston, the Phoenix Suns could be the perfect suitor for a trade.
As suggested by Suns on SI’s Jeremy Brener, Phoenix could be the right fit for the guard who has been in trade rumors for weeks on end. Brener suggested sending Grayson Allen and Royce O’Neale back to Boston.
While the Celtics might be more interested in shedding salary, getting Allen and O’Neale, who are both under contract for multiple seasons, could give Boston perfect role players on the wing when Tatum returns next season. If nothing else, their contracts could be flipped for other role players at more pressing spots, such as the frontcourt.
Although there has been no sign of an imminent Simons deal, the Celtics could easily find a new home for the former Blazer before next season tips off, and it might just be Phoenix.
