The Boston Celtics have made some big moves this summer, but they might not work out perfectly.
Coming into the offseason, there was no doubt that the Celtics would be among the most active teams in the league. With Jayson Tatum’s torn Achilles set to keep him out next season and the team’s financial situation, changes were always bound to come for Boston.
Those changes began just one day after the end of the NBA Finals, with the Celtics sending Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons. On paper, it looks like the Celtics got a great deal.
With the team adding a young scorer in Simons while dumping Holiday’s big contract, the move was immediately viewed as a win for the Celtics. However, not everyone believed the trade was a home run for Boston, including former MVP and Celtics champion Kevin Garnett.
“I don’t know if I would have given up Jrue Holiday for scoring,” Garnett said.
The legend even compared this deal to the one Milwaukee made two years ago, sending out Holiday to get Damian Lillard. While Garnett never knocked the scoring talent of guys like Lillard and Simons, he did give some insight about the little things that Holiday does.
Garnett explained that the Celtics might have added some offense, but Holiday is a winning player who knows how to make plays and tie a team together on both ends. Although the Holiday deal was as much about financial reasons as it was about basketball, Garnett has no doubt that Boston will miss its championship point guard.
