Could Old Trafford be the next stop for Emiliano Martinez? According to one former Premier League goalkeeping coach (with Aston Villa), the World Cup-winning goalkeeper has what it takes to handle the pressure — and the opportunity — at Manchester United.

Martinez, currently at Aston Villa, has been a key part of their rise under Unai Emery. But with big clubs circling and Villa reportedly scouting replacements, change could be on the horizon.

The 32-year-old has been linked with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and his old club Arsenal. Saudi clubs are also said to be interested, but one goalkeeping coach believes the biggest challenge — and the perfect fit — might be in Manchester.

“Size of the challenge” could lure Emi to United. Neil Cutler, who worked closely with Martinez at Villa, thinks United should make their move.

“This summer is pivotal for Emi in terms of his career,” Cutler told The Sun.

“He’s been voted the best goalie in the world twice and there seems to be an opportunity for him this summer, with all of his options open.”

Cutler suggest what could attract Emiliano Martinez to join Man United

While United cannot offer Champions League football, Cutler believes Martinez’s mindset makes him the right man for a club looking to bounce back.

“United can’t offer him Champions League football but the sheer size of the club and the size of the challenge might appeal to Emi,” Cutler said. “He thrives on the biggest occasions... He would look at United and say: ‘Right, I can make this place better. I can help this club get back to where it was.’”

The Red Devils, now under Ruben Amorim, are expected to be busy in the transfer market after a forgettable 2024-25 campaign.

With Andre Onana struggling, a new No. 1 could be key to Amorim’s rebuild — and Martinez’s trophy-laden CV speaks for itself.

Villa reportedly want over £40 million for the Argentine. With Martinez under contract until 2029, Villa hold the cards — but the timing could suit both sides.
