Yograj Singh doubles down on Rohit Sharma fitness: ‘Make him run 10 km daily’ image

Rohit Sharma's recent retirement from T20Is and Tests has sparked a wider conversation about his future in ODIs where he continues as India's captain. At 38, the opener remains a central figure in the squad but questions around his longevity and fitness keep surfacing.

While some voices have called for him to step back or play more domestic cricket, others believe he has several years left at the highest level. Among the most vocal supporters of Rohit is former India cricketer Yograj Singh - who insists the opener should continue for another five years.

Yograj Singh on Rohit Sharma's class and fitness

Speaking to News18 CricketNext, Yograj Singh said Rohit's batting quality stands apart and urged critics to stop questioning his contribution.

"The man about whom so many people speak rubbish, Rohit Sharma - I said that day that Rohit will be my man, the man, my man. His innings on one side and the rest of the world on the other. That's his class,” Yograj said.

He added that Rohit still has plenty left to offer if he works on his conditioning.

"Rohit, we need you for five more years, man. Put four men on him, make him run 10 kilometres every morning. He has the class to play till 45 years of age, if he wants," he said.

Yograj also suggested Rohit should consider playing more domestic cricket to stay fit. "The more you play that, the fitter you will be," he said.

Meanwhile, the question of whether senior players like Rohit and Virat Kohli should feature in tournaments such as the Vijay Hazare Trophy has gained traction. Sunil Gavaskar had previously suggested their participation in first-class and domestic competitions would help them stay in rhythm.

Former opener Aakash Chopra disagreed with the notion that Rohit and Kohli need Vijay Hazare cricket to remain relevant. He argued that with just nine ODIs scheduled before the next IPL, the gaps are too wide for domestic appearances to make any meaningful difference.

With limited ODI fixtures lined up, India will rely heavily on Rohit's experience in the build-up to global events. His performances and fitness will remain under scrutiny but the backing from former cricketers like Yograj Singh suggests he still has significant support to extend his career.
