Prithvi Shaw’s cricketing journey has been filled with ups and downs. Despite early success, hype and loads of talent, things haven’t always gone smoothly for the young batter.
Shaw made his international debut way back in 2018 in a Test series in West Indies and scored a century on his debut. He was also part of the famous Indian squad that won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2020-21.
However, things have gone downhill for the opener since then as his form dipped. He lost his place in the Indian team and his performances in domestic cricket were far from convincing.

In a recent interview, the 25-year-old compared himself to the protagonist of a popular Hindi language show, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Jethalal. For those unfamiliar, the character Jethalal is known for landing in trouble and the comic element of the series is based on how he overcomes his daily life problems.
Let’s see what Shaw had to say and why he chose such a comparison.
Why did Prithvi Shaw call himself 'Jethalal'?
When asked about the controversies that have surrounded his name in recent years, Shaw didn’t hold back. He joked that the chaos doesn’t happen because of him, it just somehow finds him.
Shaw said, "Nothing like this has happened for a long time, but one thing I would like to say is that controversies catch me. I am Jethalal of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah," as quoted by Dainik Jagran.
The comment sparked attention online, not just because of its humour, but because it reflects how Shaw sees his current situation.

After being dropped by the Mumbai Ranji side last year over fitness concerns, things went downhill. Reports suggested Shaw had around 35% body fat at one point. Despite attempts to return, he wasn’t picked for the Vijay Hazare Trophy either.
Though still very young, Shaw has found himself out of the national team since 2022 with no consistent domestic form to back his case. He also went unsold in the IPL auction held in Jeddah.
How is Prithvi Shaw planning to restart his career?
After months of uncertainty, Shaw recently received a No Objection Certificate from Mumbai to play for another state. This may be a chance for a fresh beginning, away from the baggage of past seasons.
Still, he hasn’t given up hope. As he prepares to move on to a new domestic team, Shaw will be hoping that this new chapter brings peace and form.
