Indian captain Shubman Gill scripted history on Thursday as he became the highest Indian run scorer in a Test innings on English soil with his maiden Test double hundred.

Gill played a perfect captain's knock to rescue India from an early scare in the first innings of the second Test at Edgbaston and racked up 267 runs. He was ably supported by Ravindra Jadeja on Day 2 as the all-rounder narrowly missed out on a century.

The Indian skipper not only hit a 200, but he also surpassed legendary Sunil Gavaskar to become the Indian batsman with the highest score on English soil.

Gavaskar had previously scored 221 at The Oval in 1979. The only other Indian to hit a 200 in England is former captain and India coach Rahul Dravid. The iconic batter scored 217, once again at The Oval in 2002.

Here, we take a look at the top five scores by Indians in a Test innings on English soil.
