While India played both the finals in 2021 and 2023, they ended up on the losing side both times. In 2021, the Men in Blue lost to New Zealand by 8 wickets, and then in 2023, they were defeated by Australia in a 209-run loss.

India was poised to qualify for the Finals this year too, but they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) to Australia by a margin of 3-1.

This meant that the Men in Blue could not qualify for the finals as South Africa have now been confirmed to face the defending champions Australia in the 2025 WTC Final scheduled to be held in June.

The report said, "The Guardian has learned that India expressed their intention to bid for the 2027 final at a meeting of the ICC’s chief executives committee in Zimbabwe last month."

"The Board of Control for Cricket in India is represented on the ICC committee by its chief executive, Arun Singh Dhumal, while his predecessor Jay Shah is chair of the ICC, so a formal Indian bid would be regarded as a fait accompli."

The 2021 final between India and New Zealand was held in the Rose Bowl Cricket Ground in Hampshire, England, whereas the 2023 edition was played at the Oval, again in England.
